Just as we were finishing breakfast, the doorbell rang. My parents’ eyes met before Dad spoke up.
“You expecting anyone this early?” He glanced at his wristwatch.
“No. My only plans today involve these two.” Mom’s face erupted into a wide grin as she reached out to grip my hand.
“I’ll go and see who it is, then.” Dad got up and walked to the front of the house. I couldn’t make out the conversation at the door, but I heard his astonishment as he welcomed the unexpected visitor inside.
“What a nice surprise.” Dad’s voice carried through the hallway, causing Mom to get up and start clearing the dishes.
“Look who’s here, Donna.” Dad had his arm around Brian as he walked into the kitchen. He seemed so relaxed, not at all shaken by the sight of my sister’s boyfriend whom we hadn’t seen since the funeral. Or maybe he had visited them since that day? I didn’t know.
Dad was taking the surprise a lot better than I did yesterday.
“Oh, Brian.” Mom set the plate she was holding down and approached him tentatively. She held her hands clasped together, resisting the urge to launch herself at him, like I knew she wanted to. “How I’ve missed you.” Mom’s voice cracked as she blinked back the tears.
“I’ve missed you, too.” Brian’s arms opened up, and that was all the invitation Mom needed. She latched onto him, swallowing him in a tight hug. I noticed unshed tears in Brian’s eyes, and as Mom’s arms wrapped tighter around him, his eyes closed and one tear escaped and rolled down his cheek.
My gut tightened feeling all the pent up emotion. Steph leaving us had left so many of us broken, hurt, and lost. Not just Mom, Dad, and me. Brian was another person suffering from her loss.
I was so lost in the moment, staring at my family being put back together, I didn’t notice Ainsley next to me until I felt her hand rest on my arm.
“Come on,” she whispered. “Let’s give them a moment.” My eyes were glued to the scene in front of me, Mom holding Brian at arm’s length, checking him from head to toe, Dad standing close to the side with his hand on Brian’s shoulder. I knew she was right, but I could hardly pull myself away.
“Come.” She tugged on me, and I let her lead me out of the kitchen.
I released a huge breath and ran my hand through my hair. It probably looked like a mess. I still hadn’t brushed it that morning.
Ainsley didn’t let go of me until we were seated outside on the bench facing the river. We sat there, staring out at the current coursing through the water for a while before she spoke up, interrupting the comfortable silence surrounding us.
“How are you feeling?” She continued to stroke her hand softly over my arm, causing the hairs to stand upright. Her other arm rested around my shoulder as her fingers threaded through my hair at the nape of my neck.
